Hi Folks,

I'm trying to use my Lifecam Studio webcam with vMix and while it works, the framerate is pretty poor. I'm estimating about 15fps, maybe less, but I am not sure.

I know the webcam is very sensitive to lighting so I have plenty of it (8x 55W CFL bulbs diffused).

When I try to use the Lifecam software the framerate looks appropriate and smooth, same with Wirecast. But I can't seem to get it running smoothly in vMix.

The system I'm on is quite beefy, and should not be bottlenecking. Especially considering some of my tests are using only the webcam and no other inputs or configurations.

I am using the latest drivers and the webcam has the latest firmware (as of this writing). I have also trued turning the truecolor off, and no change in framerate.

Any ideas?

When adding the camera try some different options from the Video Format dropdown box such as H264.

Okay!

I always kept trying default as I anticipated vMix may negotiate the preferred codec. But, I'll try to see if I can pick one listed in the spaces, if not, H264 is my first pick.

Any other specific recommendations for codecs to test? The list seemed a bit... long :P

I tried H264, but it spat out an error, this should be really helpful to anyone looking to use this webcam:

Unspecified error

So, I'm trying MJPEG at 60p at 1280x720. I know it says 60i, but I select 60p and it accepts it. I am not sure if it is _actually_ interlaced or not just yet... further testing. But it seems way smoother now.

This also seems to clarify as to the framerates on the device, considering it's almost impossible to find out these tidbits from listed specifications. Curious that it lists 60i for 1920x1080, that's nice :D

Thanks for your help!

Try 30p instead of 60i as it is not interlaced, that is a mistake.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be able to do 60fps at 720, but whether it's p or i, I'm not sure. I'd prefer to do 60fps, but I am not exactly certain why you propose 30p? To re-iterate, I selected 60p, not 60i, when adding the device in vMix.

Interlaced 60i is the same frame rate as 30p as it has two fields per frame.
So where vMix is saying 60i it means 30p which is what should be selected as the frame rate in vMix.

Selecting 60p will likely just cause dropped frames as the webcam will not be providing a frame rate that high.

Ahh, I had a thought it might be something like that, but good to know the expected behavior in such a scenario, I'll switch to 30p, thanks!

I have the same issue. So did you find the problem solved with 30p?

I was ready to go out and buy a USB3 card to isolate the video from other USB devices as a test.
Using 2 other cameras and 2 HDMI Capture cards which work wonderfully and make the life cam look slow and choppy.
Thanks
Mike (Burlington, Ontario)

I found switching the codec had the biggest impact, but I haven't yet had a chance to switch to 30p just yet, been busy with other things.
