Hi.

For some of us on a budget we are always on the lookout for a bargain.
This summer the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is half its normal price.

Does anybody use these currently and could they recommend them for indoor sports events.

Depends very much on the lens you purchase to go with it. To get a lens suitable for fast-moving sports will cost considerably more than the camera!!

And, because it's designed for shallow DOF, you'll have a heck of a job finding focus in a sports environment!

Another point you have to consider is that the camera only offers one output resolution (1920x1080 with 25/30fps) as far as I know. In some sports it might be better to have progressive pictures (1080p or 720p) for better quality at fast camera or object movements, especially when you want to do slow-motions.

As indicated, one of the biggest issues with the Blackmagic cameras as a live video camera source for sports broadcasts is the lack of a "proper" integrated video lens. There are workarounds but essentially these cameras are designed as cinema cameras. Even the new studio camera has not been fully thought out with respect to lens options and support.
To some degree, thanks to Blackmagic Design, the lines are starting to blur with respect to the differences between cinematic and live television production, but we are not there yet...
Hopefully, the next few years will see practical solutions introduced that will make it easier to use these devices in live video productions.
In the meantime, we have to add multiple peripherals to make them work which kind of defeats the purpose of the attractive price point of the cameras themselves.
